How this works
The new regime (s.202) is the default for 2026-27: lower slab rates, a ₹75,000 standard deduction and a rebate that makes income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free (with marginal relief just above), but almost no deductions.
The old regime keeps HRA, section 123 investments, health insurance, home loan interest and other deductions. If you do not have a business income, you can choose the old regime each year when you file your return.
Capital gains on shares, equity funds and other assets are taxed at their own rates and cannot be reduced by deductions.
Frequently asked questions
Which regime should I choose?
The one with lower tax for your numbers. The calculator shows how much more in old-regime deductions would be needed for it to win.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?
Under the new regime, the rebate covers slab tax on total income up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh of salary after the standard deduction). Tax on capital gains taxed at special rates is not covered by the rebate.
What is marginal relief?
Just above ₹12 lakh, and at each surcharge threshold, the extra tax cannot be more than the extra income. The calculator applies it automatically.
Does this include surcharge and cess?
Yes — surcharge above ₹50 lakh (highest 25% in the new regime, 37% in the old), capped at 15% on capital gains, and 4% cess.
