Show formula & working

Goal then = Cost today × (1 + i)N

SIP = (Goal then − Savings × (1 + R)N) ÷ ( ((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r × (1 + r) )

i = inflation, R = assumed yearly return, r = R ÷ 12, N = years, n = N × 12. The final (1 + r) applies when the SIP is invested at the start of each month; drop it for end-of-month SIPs.

    How this works

    A goal that costs ₹25 lakh today will cost more when you actually need the money. The calculator first inflates today's cost to the year of the goal.

    Any savings you have already earmarked are assumed to grow at the same return and are subtracted. The SIP has to build what remains.

    The SIP is the monthly amount that, invested every month at the assumed return, grows to exactly that gap. Change the return or inflation to see how sensitive the plan is — a lower return means a higher SIP.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the return guaranteed?

    No. The return is an assumption you choose for illustration. Mutual fund returns vary, can be negative over short periods, and past performance does not indicate future returns.

    Why use a separate inflation rate for the goal?

    Different goals inflate at different speeds. Education and medical costs have often risen faster than everyday prices, so it helps to set the inflation for this goal on its own.

    Start or end of month — does it matter?

    Slightly. Investing at the start of the month gives each instalment one extra month of growth, so the SIP needed is a little lower.

    What if I can't afford the SIP shown?

    You can lengthen the timeline, add a lumpsum, plan a yearly step-up in the SIP, or adjust the goal. Each changes the monthly amount needed.
