How this works
Two products with the same headline return can leave very different amounts after tax. FD interest is taxed every year; a debt fund is taxed only when you redeem, so the money compounds untaxed meanwhile.
Equity funds and gold ETFs held longer than 12 months pay lower long-term rates; PPF is tax-free.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the debt fund beat the FD at the same return?
Tax is deferred until redemption, so the untaxed amount keeps compounding.
Is the equity exemption per fund?
No, ₹1.25 lakh a year in total across all long-term equity gains.
Is surcharge included?
No. Add it if your income is above ₹50 lakh.
