Sovereign Gold Bond terms: rates and rules as of 30-Oct-2026 · Source: RBI FAQ on Sovereign Gold Bonds; RBI press releases of 22 Oct 2021 (Series VII issue price) and 30 Oct 2026 (premature redemption price). Every figure based on it stays editable.
How this works
An SGB earns the change in the gold price plus 2.5% a year interest on the issue price. XIRR combines both on their actual dates.
Bonds run eight years, with early redemption allowed from the fifth year on interest dates; the redemption price is the average 999 gold price of the previous three business days (IBJA).
Frequently asked questions
Is the interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate.
Is the gain on redemption tax-free?
From 1 April 2026, only for an individual who held the bond from original issue till maturity (eight years). Early redemption with RBI or a sale on the exchange is taxed — 12.5% when held over 12 months.
Why is my return higher than gold's?
Because of the 2.5% yearly interest on top of the price gain.
