Show formula & working
n = −ln(1 − P × r ÷ EMI) ÷ ln(1 + r) (Excel NPER)
The EMI must be larger than the first month's interest (P × r), otherwise the loan never reduces.Details
How this works
Paying a little more than the minimum EMI shortens a long loan by years. Try raising the EMI by 10% and watch the tenure fall.
The last EMI is usually smaller, because only the balance left is due.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my EMI need to exceed the interest?
If the EMI only covers interest, the balance never falls. The calculator warns you when that happens.
Can I raise my EMI with my lender?
Many lenders allow a higher EMI or regular part-prepayments. Ask how they treat a higher EMI — some process it as a prepayment.
