Interest = Unpaid outstanding × (monthly rate × 12 ÷ 365) × days from transaction to the next statement

GST = 18% of interest and fees

If the total due is not paid by the due date, the interest-free period is lost and interest runs from the transaction date on the outstanding amount — not on the total amount due. No interest may be charged on unpaid taxes or charges.

    How this works

A credit card is interest-free only if you pay the whole bill by the due date. Pay less — even the minimum — and interest runs from the date of each purchase on the amount left unpaid, plus GST.

A rate of 3.5% a month works out to about 51% a year once compounded — far more than almost any loan.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum amount due?

The smallest payment that avoids a late fee. RBI requires it to be set so the balance does not grow from unpaid interest — but paying only the minimum still costs heavy interest.

Does interest apply to new purchases too?

While a balance is carried, new purchases usually lose the interest-free period as well. Pay the full balance to get it back.
