Kabir's car at last

One month later… Vroom! I bought it with my OWN savings! And you still had money for a few chips. Planned chips! But now my Save jar is empty again. Mine isn't! I've saved ₹1,000 for my dream: becoming a doctor. A doctor? That's years and years away! Will ₹1,000 be enough by then? Not on its own. But I know a magic that helps money grow! MAGIC?!
Ajja's mango tree

Want to see real magic? Look up. I planted this tree when I was ten. About 60 years ago… It was just one small mango seed. One seed made ALL these mangoes? Hundreds, every single summer! And seeds from its mangoes grew into these new trees. Trees making more trees! Money can grow just like this tree. Shall I show you how? Yes, please, Didi!
The Magic Garden game

Just a game! Real banks pay less. In my Magic Garden, money earns ₹10 for every ₹100 each year. I plant my ₹1,000! Ready to grow! After one year, you earn ₹100 interest. Now you have ₹1,100. Yay! Year two: interest on ₹1,100 is ₹110. Now you have ₹1,210! Wait. Why ₹110, not ₹100? Because last year's ₹100 interest started earning interest too! Interest earning interest!
Money babies

Year three: ₹121 interest! It gets bigger every year. So I'd have ₹1,331! This is called compound interest. Your money's babies have babies! Money babies! Meet my coin babies! And soon, THEIR babies! Like a batsman! The longer he stays, the faster the runs come. Perfect example, Joel! So time is the secret ingredient? Yes! Money, plus interest, plus TIME.
Almost double!

In my game, your ₹1,000 becomes about ₹1,950 in 7 years. Almost double! In 14 years, about ₹3,800. WHAT?! And about ₹7,400 in 21 years, without adding a single rupee! By the time I'm a doctor, my money will have grown a lot! That's the magic of starting early. But real banks don't give ₹10 for every ₹100, right? True! Real money grows slower. But the magic works the same way.
Two seeds

One seed each. Plant it whenever you like. I'll plant mine today! I'll plant mine… later. After my cartoon! Your choice! Imagine, ten years later… Why is MY tree so small?! Mine had a few extra years to grow. Same seed, same soil. The only difference was TIME. That's why we start early!
Zoya and Joel's race

Another Magic Garden game Let's imagine Zoya and Joel saving ₹100 a month, ₹1,200 a year. Zoya starts at 10. She saves for 10 years, then stops. ₹12,000 in total! Joel starts at 20. He saves for 20 years. ₹24,000! Double Zoya's! At age 40, Zoya has about ₹1,29,000. Joel has about ₹69,000! But I saved MORE! My money had more time to grow. Starting early can beat saving more later!
At the bank

Next Saturday, at the bank I want my ₹1,000 to grow for many years! Wonderful! Let's look at a fixed deposit. In a cumulative FD, your interest is added back, so it earns interest too. Just like Didi's game! Do you give ₹10 for every ₹100? Less than that, and rates change. But time still works its magic. And a recurring deposit lets us add a little every month! Me too! ₹100 a month! Let's fill in the form together. My doctor fund starts today!
Don't dig up the seed!

Two months later… A robot that DANCES! Not again! I'll take my money out of my RD and buy it! But you only just started! Kabir, if I had dug up my seed every week to check it, would this tree be here? No… it would never grow. Taking savings out early is like digging up the seed. Okay! The robot can wait. My money tree can't!
Too good to be true

Look! A message on Papa's phone says, "Double your money in 7 days!" 7 days? In Didi's game, it took 7 YEARS just to almost double! When someone promises to double money very fast, it's almost always a trick. Never send money, never click the link, never share an OTP. Tell a grown-up. Showing Papa right now! Real money grows slow and steady, like a mango tree. Never in 7 days!
Shoebox or mango tree?

Remember my shoebox? Money in there never grew at all. It only fed the mouse! And remember? Prices keep puffing up like a balloon! So money that just sits still buys a little less every year. But growing money can keep up! Shoebox money stands still. Prices rise. Growing money tries to rise with them! That's why grown-ups try to grow savings faster than prices rise. Smart!
Ajja's first deposit

When I got my first salary, I put ₹500 in a fixed deposit. And he never touched it, no matter what! Not even for a new bicycle! Years later, it had grown many times bigger and helped our whole family. Wow, Ajja! Ajja, do you wish you had started even earlier? Every grown-up wishes that, beta! That's why you're lucky. You can start NOW, even with a little.
Every goal needs time

My goal: a telescope in two years. I'll save a little every month. To see the stars! Mine is cricket camp next summer. A short goal! I'll come too! My doctor fund is a long goal. I'll let it grow for years. Art school one day! I'm starting now, even with ₹50. Every seed counts! Short goals for soon. Long goals to grow. Both need a plan and patience!
Money that works while you sleep

Six months later… Look, Kabir. You've saved ₹600, and the bank has added a little interest. My money earned money while I was SLEEPING! And it keeps working every single day. Hard-working money! And I don't even miss that robot anymore. The waiting rule wins again! Patience is a superpower, Kabir. You've got it!
Planting day

This time, I'm planting mine TODAY! Good boy! One for each of us! Your tree has a head start, Siddu. But yours started today. That's what counts! Every seed you plant today, and every rupee you save today, grows with time. In a few years, you'll share mangoes with your own grandchildren! Can I share them NOW?
The magic secret

So, Paisa Pals, what's the magic secret? 1. Start early. 2. Keep adding a little. 3. Don't dig it up. Let time work! Start early, grow steady! Squeak! My cheese tree will be HUGE! Next, keep your money safe online in Book 5: The Secret Code Club! Bye! I'm off to check on my seed!

Grow a Seed, Grow a Rupee: 4-week challenge
- With a grown-up, plant a fast-growing seed, like a bean or methi, in a small pot. Water it every day.
- Put some pocket money in a jar. A grown-up is the Banker.
- Every Sunday, the Banker adds ₹1 for every ₹10 in the jar, counting last week's interest too. (That's far more than a real bank pays. It's just for the game!)
- Each Sunday, write down how tall your plant is and how much money is in the jar.
- After 4 weeks, talk about it: which grew faster each week? What would happen if you kept going for a year?
For parents and teachers

What this book teaches
What interest is, how compound interest works (interest earning interest), why starting early gives savings more time to grow, why saving regularly and patiently matters, and how to recognise offers that promise to double money quickly.
Talk about it
- What is something you could plant or save for today that will grow over many years?
- Why did Zoya end up with more money than Joel, even though she saved less?
- If someone promised to double your money in a week, what would you do?
Good to know
- The 'Magic Garden' rate of ₹10 for every ₹100 a year is a game number chosen to make the idea easy to see. Real interest rates are lower and change over time.
- In a cumulative (reinvestment) fixed deposit, interest is added back to the deposit, so it compounds. The Rule of 72 gives a rough idea of doubling time: divide 72 by the yearly interest rate.
- Offers that promise to double money quickly are a common sign of fraud. In India, financial cyber fraud can be reported on the national helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
